The BSD portion of the OS X kernel is derived primarily from FreeBSD, a version of 4.4BSD that offers advanced networking, performance, security, and compatibility features. BSD variants in general are derived (sometimes indirectly) from 4.4BSD-Lite Release 2 from the Computer Systems Research Group (CSRG) at the University of California at. FreeBSD (if that's the variant you want to run) looks like it should run on the Mac, evidenced here: AppleMacBookWikiEntry. NetBSD is really the BSD variant that is known for running on just about anything with a processor. They also appear to maybe sorta support Mac hardware. See: NetBSD information.
Parallels Desktop for Mac ® is a commercial software product available for Intel ® based Apple ® Mac ® computers running Mac OS ® 10.4.6 or higher. FreeBSD is a fully supported guest operating system. Once Parallels has been installed on Mac OS ® X, the user must configure a virtual machine and then install the desired guest operating system.
The PS4 also runs BSD, and Mac OS X and iOS are based on Darwin, which is a BSD fork. That probably won't make ports easier (or harder) but if anyone's going 'I've never heard of this' well you've probably already used it! EDIT: also my title isn't QUITE true, the NES classic runs Linux. But considering that thing is an off-the-shelf premade. FreeBSD (if that's the variant you want to run) looks like it should run on the Mac, evidenced here: AppleMacBookWikiEntry. How to run mac apps on linux mint. NetBSD is really the BSD variant that is known for running on just about anything with a processor. They also appear to maybe sorta support Mac hardware. See: NetBSD information.
- 10.1. Synopsis
- 10.2. Configuring Linux® Binary Compatibility
- 10.3. Advanced Topics
FreeBSD provides binary compatibility with Linux®, allowing users to install and run most Linux® binaries on a FreeBSD system without having to first modify the binary. It has even been reported that, in some situations, Linux® binaries perform better on FreeBSD than they do on Linux®.
However, some Linux®-specific operating system features are not supported under FreeBSD. Document management app mac. For example, Linux® binaries will not work on FreeBSD if they overly use i386™ specific calls, such as enabling virtual 8086 mode.
Note:
Support for 64-bit binary compatibility with Linux® was added in FreeBSD 10.3.
